Defining Streetwear
Streetwear is a fashion style that originated in America during the 1990s. It prioritises comfort without sacrificing style. This is particularly important for the younger generation who wear streetwear, allowing self-expression through fashion while providing comfort for their increasingly busy lives.
Unlike many other styles, streetwear doesn’t conform to the norms in trends. The trickle-down theory is inapplicable in this style. Instead, streetwear brands take inspiration from many things, such as subcultures, including skateboarders, punks and even graffiti art.
Streetwear has become a globally recognised style that is mainly worn by people under the age of 25. For many individuals, it is all about the uniqueness of their clothing. In contrast, the older generation still prefers to shop at high street stores; the younger generation likes the exclusivity of owning clothing that is not commonly available. Streetwear brands benefit from this by offering limited clothing drops, generating hype around new releases, and quickly selling out their limited-time pieces. Streetwear is typically more affordable than high fashion, making it more accessible for the younger generation.
Streetwear is an umbrella term for this style’s entire ‘genre’. Drawing influence from various sources such as hip-hop, movies, sports, TV, History, Graffiti, Skating and more results in four distinct styles, which are :
- Athleisure
- High-end
- Skatewear
- Techwear
Athleisure, also known as athletic wear, involves brands that primarily create sportswear but are now expanding into the streetwear market by offering various items, for example, graphic t-shirts. Athleisure combines athletic and leisure clothing, resulting in versatile clothing that can be worn at home, in the gym, or out in public. These clothing items are designed to be fashionable and suitable for most occasions.
High-end streetwear combines luxury fashion and streetwear. This style gained popularity in 2017 when people known as ‘hype beasts’ started to mix brands such as Supreme and Louis Vuitton. This style was particularly notable during the Supreme x Louis Vuitton collaboration. Those wearing this style tend to be interested in the exclusivity of the pieces and trends rather than the clothing’s meaning or appearance.
Skatewear is the most recognised style of streetwear. This style emphasises loose-fitting, comfortable and stylish clothing, typically featuring graphics.Skating is still considered trendy, resulting in many people wearing skatewear brands, including celebrities such as A$AP Rocky and Drake, who have been seen wearing Palace. Often, this leads to their fans buying clothing from those brands.
Techwear emphasises utility and style; techwear pieces typically feature many pockets, producing more exclusive items, such as utility vests. Most techwear has a futuristic look, appears more grungey, and primarily uses black material. The clothing is very rigorous and holds their condition well. These items are made to be durable; their rugged design will uphold many encounters, whether rain or withholding from tares.
